tēna koe, my name is Sarah and I'm the maker behind hwyl. I live in Tāmaki Makarau, Aotearoa with my partner and two dogs. When I'm not making things at home, I'm making things for film & TV (my 9 to 5). Most of the hwyl collections and items started out as me doing fun projects for myself and 'chasing the dopamine' wherever it led me! This often meant taking courses, reading books, learning new skills, and then practicing them consistently until I've streamlined it into an item I love! More often than not it resulted in people asking where I got items, and then if I could make one for them. For years I have offered limited edition collections to my family, friends, & social media followers. During the first lockdown in NZ (March 2020), I made myself some activewear tights, then I made some for my sister, then a friend, then their friends started asking... being unable to go to work, having a need to keep my hands moving, and having people seeming to want my product, I launched hwyl in website form. All of the products on hwyl are hand-crafted in my little home studio, with fabrics and findings specially sourced from trusted partners. We live in a fast-paced society that has a high turnover of 'stuff'. My aim is to create products that are made consciously, locally, using quality materials and processes that will enable a product that will last and be loved for years to come.
